President's Strong Statement Amid Tilottama Incident :
Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, August 30, 2024, New Delhi: President Draupadi Murmu has made a significant statement amid the uproar over the brutal murder of a young doctor at RG Kar Medical College Hospital in Kolkata. On August 28,she stated, "Enough is enough." This statement has sparked speculation among some political leaders about the potential imposition of President's Rule in West Bengal.
On Tuesday, following the police's use of batons, water cannons, and tear gas during the student society's 'Nabanna Abhiyan,' opposition leader Suvendu Adhikari, while sitting at Howrah railway station, called for the imposition of President's Rule in the state and demanded transparent elections.
Within 24 hours of the President's statement, her official X (formerly Twitter) handle posted on Wednesday afternoon, "Enough is enough," in response to the RG Kar incident. A three-page PDF statement was also attached. At the top of the first page, it read: "Women's Safety: Enough is Enough." The statement further mentioned, "Honest introspection is needed to uncover the roots of the growing discomfort with recent crimes against women."
The detailed statement reads: "The horrific incident of rape and murder of a doctor in Kolkata has shocked the nation. I was deeply disappointed and horrified upon hearing this. What is even more disheartening is that this was not an isolated incident; it is part of a series of crimes against women. Even as students, doctors, and citizens in Kolkata were protesting, criminals continued to roam free. Even young girls in kindergartens are among the victims. No civilized society can allow its daughters and sisters to be subjected to such atrocities."
The President continued, "The nation is bound to be outraged, and so am I. Last year, on the occasion of Women's Day, I shared my thoughts and hopes on women's empowerment in a newspaper article. I remain optimistic, thanks to our past achievements in women's empowerment. I consider myself an example of that spectacular journey of women's empowerment in India."
"it is time for India to wake up to the “perversion” of crimes against women and counter the mindset that sees women as “less powerful, less capable, less intelligent”., she added.
“Those who share such views then go further and see the female as an object… We owe it to our daughters to remove the hurdles from their path of winning the freedom from fear,” She said to PTI.
She concluded by stating, "A lot has happened, but now, no more crimes against women should be tolerated."
