Bailey bridge over Teesta at Tarkhola collapses before inauguration
YOWAN MOTHAY, EOI, KALIMPONG, DARJEELING, 20 FEBRUARY 2024 : The Bailey bridge being constructed at Tarkhola at Ramphu about 23 km from Kalimpong to connect with the Thalthaley area in south Sikkim collapsed early on Tuesday morning, injuring five workers in the incident.
The collapse of the bridge, which was coming up on the West Bengal-Sikkim border, however, will not affect the major part of the traffic flow between the two states.
Eyewitness claimed that the incident took place around 10.40 a.m. on Tuesday while plates were being put on it. The bridge was scheduled to be completed and inaugurated during the day.
One of the injured workers suffered serious head injury. Members of the Teesta Rangit Rescue Team took the injured workers to Kalimpong District Hospital.
The old bridge on the river at the spot was swept away in the flash flood in river Teesta on October 4 last year. The Bailey bridge was being constructed by a private contractors’ firm on behalf of the NHPC.
The capacity of the 200 metre long bridge was 25 tonnes. (With our Darjeeling correspondent
