POCSO slapped on Siliguri school girl murder accused


PRASHANT ACHARYA, EOI, SILIGURI, SEPTEMBER 1, 2023 : In the atmosphere where hundreds of people were demanding for capital punishment. 
The accused of Siliguri minor girl murder case Mohammad Abbas was on Friday produced in Siliguri Court amid tight security. Abbas was remanded four more days in police custody. 
Hundreds of social workers, lawyers and individuals dressed in black T-shirts were on silent protest at the court premises during the production of Abbas before the Judicial Magistrate. 
The protesters are still demanding justice for the victim and capital punishment for Abbas who was brought to the court in tight security. Abbas, who was in 10 days’ police custody after his arrest, was for the first time produced at the court on Friday. 
The prosecution prayed for further police remand of the accused. 
Meanwhile, the police have added section 6 under POCSO Act along with IPC sections 302 and 376. The slapping of section 6 of POCSO could mean life imprisonment for the accused. 
Police sources said that during his10-day remand the accused had revealed the details of the incident and had admitted that the had been a friend of the student for about four months. On the day of the incident, he waited to drop off the schoolgirl from her school, took the minor girl to a location in Matigara and tried to sexually assault her. 
As the girl tried to resist Md Abbas attacked the school girl with a brick and escaped from the scene. Lawyer of Siliguri Court Birendra Rasaily said that more than 100 lawyers of Siliguri Bar Association had filed Vakalatnama in favor of the victim and also filed an application under section 1 A of171 CrPC to request for speedy investigation within two months’ time. 
Till date no lawyer came forward to take the case of Abbas. The next date for production is on September 4
