Manipuri Meitei Association condemns Assault of Meitei girl allegedly by Kukis in a Manglore College
KalimNews, Bangalore, 26 August 2023 : The Manipuri Meitei Association, Bangalore (MMAB), condemned the recent assault on an 11th-Grade Meitei girl at St. Agnes College by a group of Kuki from the same institution.
A press release by the MMAB said, “The MMAB verified the incident and confirmed the college’s location in Mangalore and her well-being.
We ensured the student’s wellbeing
by implementing timely
safety measures and arranging
alternative accommodations. We engaged with senior
Meitei female student and
NEPAM members, an association
led by the Naga sisters,
to create a unified support
system.
Additionally, we have
contacted her parents and her
local guardian, Lt. Col, who will
act upon arrival.
According to a report published in Sangai express a Meitei student studying at St Agnes College in Mangaluru, Karnaka has reportedly been repeatedly assaulted by Kukis who are schoolmates.
The Meitei student Jeji Yengkokpam, daughter of Y Ajitkumar of Top Mayai Leikai, Imphal East is in XI standard at the Catholic missionary institution.
The published news states that a group of Kuki students at St Agnes including her classmates have been assaulting Jeji since sometime back and the recent incident took place on August 23, its confirmed by various sources.
The sources said that the Kuki students twisted the arm of the girl, grabbed her neck and tried to push her inside a dustbin in the recent case.
The parents of the young student came to know of the bullying from Jeji herself.
Soon after, her parents sent a person whom they knew to the place where the Meitei student was staying.
Jeji told the person whom her parents sent about the Kuki students who bullied and assaulted her.
As per Jeji, about 100 Kukis study at St Agnes College of which 40 of them are in the XI standard alone.
The student also told the person that Kuki students have been teasing and assaulting her during school hours and breakfast, lunch and dinner time at the hostel.
The sources said that Jeji's father has taken a flight for Mangaluru today.
The MMAB
Women’s Cell Secretary,
Binika Pangambam, kept in
constant touch with both the
student and her mother, offering
reassurance throughout.
We are also currently collaborating
with the student’s parents
to file an FIR, striving to
prevent such incidents from
reoccurring during these trying
times.”
The MMAB convey its
gratitude to NEPAM’s Naga
sisters, Kaini and Christy
Shimray, for their invaluable
support, presence and companionship
provided to the
student.
The MMAB also urges all
Manipuri students to avail the
educational benefits offered
by the Karnataka Government
during crises and not to indulge
in any form of violence.
The MMAB deeply opposes
community-targeted
violence, exemplified by the St.
Agnes College incident.
