Lok Nath Sharma seeks help of Centre for propagation of yak and Tibetan sheep

EOI, GANGTOK, JUNE 2, 2023 : Addressing the National Summer Meet on Animal Husbandry and Dairying sector in Srinagaron Friday, Sikkim Minister for Animal Husbandry Lok Nath Sharma pitched for the propagation of highland animal husbandry like yak and Tibetan sheep. the establishment for a Central Veterinary University in Sikkim and support for the creation of veterinary hospitals and dispensaries in the state and a special package for animal husbandry in the north-eastern and hilly states.

He mentioned the progress made in the veterinary sector in Sikkim under the leadership of Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, and applauded the Central initiative of setting up mobile veterinary units which had helped all the districts of the Himalayan state of Sikkim. He urged the Centre to increase the number of such units to ensure comprehensive coverage even in difficult hilly terrains. 

He said around 2,000 farmers had benefitted from Kisan Credit Card – Animal Husbandry within one year of its launching. He drew attention to the need for IVF cenes and embryo transfer technology, the allocation of funds for purchase of medicines and a special grant for the protection of high altitude animals like yak. 

He underlined the need for a feed and fodder processing unit for the benefit of Sikkim farmers by reducing the price offered. 

Sikkim Secretary Animal Husbandry Department P. Senthil Kumar also attended the meet. Union Minister for Animal Husbandry Parshottam Rupala assured continued support of the Ministry for Sikkim.
