Through the gallery, visitors can learn about Kalimpong Science Centre now has a Nuclear Power Gallery how a nuclear power plant is operated.
The model placed in the Nuclear Power Gallery will make it easier to understand. Deputy General Manager (Corporate Communication) of NPCIL Amites Srivastava who visited the site on Thursday said that as soon as nuclear power was mentioned people had a negative perception associated with it. But nuclear power was the most eco-friendly source of energy. In India, however, so far it was the source of only three percent of electricity generation.
While more than 70 percent of the country's electricity was now generated by the use of polluting fuels.
Nuclear power in India has a lot of potential if it is operated in a proper way, Srivastava said. Only 22 power plants were in operation in India and 10 other power plants were under construction. Countries like America and France had made nuclear power plants a large part of the source of energy, but India had not yet done significant work in this direction.
Before setting up a large number of nuclear power plants, there was a need to create a positive public opinion about it. If properly understood, people would accept it as a major energy source.
“The Nuclear Power Gallery at the Kalimpong Science Center will make people understand this in detail," said Srivastava. Students of St Augustine School, Kalimpong participated in the talk, which was followed by an interactive session.
