JAC to celebrate 8th May Agreement in Singtam on May 8

DICHEN ONGMU, EOI, GANGTOK, APRIL 30, 2023 : The Joint Action Council [JAC] on Sunday announced to celebrate the 50th year of the signing of the 8th May Agreement [Tripartite Agreement 1973] on May 8 at Singtam Bazaar in East Sikkim.
JAC has invited all political parties, organisations of different communities of Sikkim, non-governmental organisations, employees of government and private sectors, students and people from different walks of life and different sections of the Sikkimese society to be a part of the event.
Addressing a news conference on Saturday afternoon, JAC spokesperson Passang Sherpa said that the event on May 8 at Singtam would be to remind the 1.4 billions of Indian people of their promise made to 700,00 of Sikkimese people in the Tripartite Agreement.
He mentioned that the Tripartite Agreement was not only a historical but still a living document for Sikkim and its people which gave a hope for their protection. For the same reason, JAC had decided to celebrate the50th year of the signing of the Tripartite Agreement 1973 between the Indian Government, the Chogyal of Sikkim and the people of Sikkim.
“This is historic as the people of Sikkim took part in the policy making decision for the first time. It is considered the democratic day for Sikkim as the democratic system was established in Sikkim from that day,” he expressed.
Sherpa said the tripartite agreement guaranteed the protection of Sikkimese people and their identity and future and the affairs of Sikkim were being run largely on the provisions of the agreement made in that document.
He said the document also clarified the identity of genuine Sikkimese people which included Sikkimese Bhutia, Sikkimese Lepcha and Sikkimese Nepali.
He added that Sikkimese communities of Bhutia, Lepcha, Chumbipa, Dopthapa, Dukpa, Kagatey, Sherpa, Tibetan, Tromopa and Yolmo recorded under Sikkimese Bhutia-Lepcha and Tsong community and Chettri, Bahun, Rai, Gurung, Newar, Mangar, Tamang, Jogi, Mukhia, Yakha Dewan, Sunuwar, Thami and Majhi and Kami, Damai and Sarki under scheduled castes of Sikkim under Sikkimese Nepali were protected under the Tripartite Agreement called 8th May Agreement 1973; but the recent Finance Act 2023 had recorded new people in the definition of Sikkimese.
He said the JAC had been pursuing the present crisis on Sikkimese definition from day one and has already apprised the matter to the Centre and State governments and political parties and now through this event at Singtam the JAC wanted to remind 1.40 billion of people of India of their promise made to 700,000 people of Sikkim.
“We would also write soon to the Chief Minister of every State and Union Territories of the county,” he said. He informed that JAC has taken the proper permission from the administration for the Singtam event. Sherpa mentioned that JAC wants to request everyone to be apart of the event as Sikkimese by keeping their political affiliation and outfit aside.
He informed that JAC has also written to the Governor of Sikkim to present the event as the chief guest and would also invite the Chief Minister
