Ashok Nath and agencies, April 22, 2023 : Neelam Gurung from Sikkim became the first poet idol on the stage of The Poet Idol held in Nepal. The first season ended today, who thanked everyone who supported her.
In a stunning finale of the Reality Show ‘The Poet Idol Season 1’, Sikkim’s versatile talent Neelam Gurung has been crowned the first-ever Poet Idol, winning the hearts of audiences with her powerful poems and equally powerful recitations.
Poet Gurung who hails from Tadong Sikkim was declared the winner of the first season in the grand finale held on Friday.
Neelam, who won the most audience votes, was awarded a Trophy, Cash Prize of Rupees 1 Million (Nepalese currency) from Director AP1 HD TV, Capt. Rameshwar Thapa, and a Rs 5 Lakh contract for book publishing from Yatra Publishing House.
More than 200 participants from all over the world had registered for the reality show, among which 14 poets were shortlisted for the final stage.
Gurung’s journey to the finals of Poet Idol has been phenomenal, impressing audiences with her powerful and emotional performances.
30 year old Neelam, a Nepali subject teacher of a government school, who is also a stand-up comedian, songwriter, singer, translator and a voice-over artist, has immense love for her mother tongue and that is something that has made her a standout performer and winner of the competition.
Her Poetry:
Gurung’s poetry and recitations are meant for revolution as they are powerful and mostly talk about women making a difference. She understands the pulse of society which reflects in each of her performances.
Her deep understanding of the social issues that unfortunate ones deal with on a daily basis is something that makes her artwork impactful generating goosebumps among the audiences.
Her performances were proof of the abundant talent that she is blessed with and the confidence that she adorns. She resonates with the audience because she tells the stories from their perspective.
The other finalists, Pallawib Singock, Milson Rai, and Nathan Ryan, all put on stellar performances, but it was Gurung’s mastery of the art form and her ability to connect with audiences that ultimately clinched her the top spot.
The Poet Idol Judges and Audience
The judges, including Suraksha Panta, Upendra Subba, Anup Baral, and Viplob Pratik, praised Neelam’s performances throughout the competition, but the final decision was left to the audience, who overwhelmingly voted in favour of Gurung.
She received huge support from the whole of Sikkim and the surrounding region throughout her campaign in the first-ever poetry reality show.
Gurung’s victory is a victory for women, a moment of pride for the whole of Sikkim, with local communities and her students celebrating her achievements and hailing her as a role model.
