Before G20, MG Marg depicts Sikkim’s legacy

 We have planned Landmark Monument to reflect our history, culture, tradition and heritage, says Gary Chopel

Rajeev Ravidas   |   TT  |   Gangtok   |    15.03.23 ; Sikkim’s capital is all decked up to host two G20-related events from Thursday with MG Marg, the Gangtok’s main promenade, in particular, getting a major facelift with the setting up of the “Landmark Monument” depicting the rich culture, tradition and history of the Himalayan state.

The beautification of MG Marg, which is a favourite hangout for both tourists and local people, includes the “Celebration Point” that has come up at the New Market end of the road.

Besides the G20 logo displayed at the centre of the promenade, flags of the 19 nations and the European Union that make up the global economic forum have been lined up, giving it a colourful look.

“We have planned the Landmark Monument, which stretches for about 140 to 150 feet, to reflect our history, culture, tradition and heritage. We have tried to replicate the three monuments of Rabdentse (the second capital of the former kingdom of Sikkim). On both sides of the replications, we have (the models of) our state bird and animal. We have also installed signage to enable tourists to read and gain knowledge about our place,” said Gary Chopel, the additional chief town planner of the Gangtok Municipal Corporation (GMC).

Pots with flowers in full bloom have also been laid on the entire stretch of MG Marg and on different pedestrian bridges that dot the town. The bridges and railings along the footpaths have also been repaired and provided with a fresh coat of paint.

“Sikkim is honoured to host two meetings as a part of India’s G20 presidency. The government of Sikkim and the Sikkimese people wholeheartedly welcome all dignitaries to our beloved state,” said Sikkim chief minister P. S. Tamang (Golay) after inaugurating the Landmark Monument andCelebration Park on Tuesday morning.

The first batch of 40 delegates will be arriving onWednesday for the two-day Business 20 (B20) event beginning on Thursday. “They will be arriving at the PakyongAirport on a chartered flight from Delhi. From there, they will drive up to Gangtok where they will be received at the MGMarg,” said a senior state government official.

The official said the second batch of delegates for the Startup 20 event on Saturday and Sunday would arrive in Bagdogra on Friday.

“They, too, will be received at the MG Marg on their arrival in Gangtok,” the official added.
