Restoration work on the road from Teesta Bazar to the Triveni camp site starts under the GTA's supervision |
Bireswar Banerjee, TT, Siliguri, 25.12.23 : The Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) started restoration work near the camping site at Triveni in Kalimpong on Saturday.
The October 4 flash flood had damaged the road leading to the site, among others.
“We have taken up the task to restore the damaged part of the 2km road that connects the campsite of Triveni with Teesta Bazar in a month. Work began on Saturday. Once the road is ready, removing huge silt deposits will start,” said Norden Sherpa, the executive member (Tourism) of GTA, on Sunday.
Sherpa, along with Sonam Bhutia, the executive director of the hill body, also inspected Triveni, some 55km from here, on Saturday.
Located at the confluence of the Rangeet and Teesta rivers, Triveni is popular among tourists, especially those interested in rafting.
Ashish Thapa, the Triveni Camping Welfare Association chief, said the Teesta flood snatched the livelihood of around 500 people at the Triveni site.
“We have submitted reports of losses to the GTA, the district administration and the administrative block office of Rangli-Rangliot. Now that the GTA has taken up restoration work, we hope camping at Triveni can resume soon,” Thapa said.
A GTA official said rafting would not resume till clearance from the Indian army and the district administration.
