Triveni, now a major tourist destination, needs better garbage management

YOWAN MOTHAY, EOI, KALIMPONG, 12 NOVEMBER 12, 2022:  Triveni, at the foot of the Kalimpong hills, on National Highway 10, is emerging as an important destination for domestic as well as foreign tourists.
A flip side of this, however, is the need for a better garbage management system at Triveni. For the past few days, garbage is getting piled up, though people who run a camping business pick up and burn the garbage in the area or dig trenches elsewhere. It seems there is a need to have a place for garbage disposal away from the Triveni complex. People visiting Triveni share this view.
Located a little above Teesta Bazaar, Triveni is the confluence of rivers Teesta and Rangit. It is a place where everyone can connect with nature.
The viewpoint located on Peshok Road, a little above Teesta Bazaar, offers a clear view of the confluence of the two rivers and the beauty of Triveni.
It is a place for forest picnics, fishing and fun. From the month of November to February, there is a crowd in Triveni, giving the area a festive look, rafting in river Teesta, camping on the bank, feasting in the forest. Believers also come to worship river Teesta. Triveni has also become popular for night camps in the last few years.
Since2021, the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration Tourism Department has approved the holding of night camps in Triveni from September to February. Presently, night camping is being conducted under the umbrella of Triveni Camping and Welfare Association.
