Some of the most inspirational women belonged to Darjeeling: Raju Bista

YOWAN MOTHAY, EOI, KALIMPONG, 4 DECEMBER 2022: The National Commission for Women started a two-day awareness seminar in Kalimpong on Saturday.
Darjeeling Lok Sabha MP Raju Bista was the chief guest at the seminar held at the Ramakrishna Rang Manch, while Rajya Sabha MP Rupa Ganguly and National Commission for Women Chairperson Rekha Sharma were present.
On the first day, the audience was informed of various government schemes provided to women. On the second day, there was an awareness programme about human trafficking.
Raju Bista said some of the most inspirational women had belonged to Darjeeling, like freedom fighter Helen Lepcha who had helped Netaji Subash Chandra Bose escape British imprisonment.
Not many might be aware of this, but the first woman parliamentarian from West Bengal was Maya Devi Chettri from Kurseong.
She was elected to the Rajya Sabha in 1952. The leading light of anti-human trafficking campaign in the world Anuradha Koirala of Maiti Nepal was educated at Kalimpong, St. Joseph’s Convent.
