5 arrested, Rs 93.83 lakh in cash seized from Bihar SUV in Jalpaiguri

PTI, JALPAIGURI, DECEMBER 5, 2022: Five people were arrested after Rs 93.83 lakh in cash was allegedly found in their vehicle in West Bengal's Jalpaiguri district, police said on Monday.
Acting on a tip-off, officers of the Binnaguri police outpost intercepted the Bihar-registered SUV on Asian Highway(AH) 48 in the Banarhat area on Sunday evening, they said.
On searching the vehicle, Rs 93.83 lakh in cash was found hidden in the spare wheel of the car under its rear seat, Jalpaiguri's Superintendent of Police Biswajit Mahato told PTI. 
Four of those arrested are residents of Bihar, while one person is from the Uttar Dinajpur district of West Bengal, he said. Initial probe revealed that the black SUV was transporting the money from Bihar to Assam's Guwahati, he added. 
"We had to dismantle the stepney to recover the cash, which was being smuggled by these five people. The initial probe revealed that they were taking the money to Guwahati. We are verifying their claims," the officer said.
 West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday alleged that the money was meant for the BJP. Claiming that Central forces were used by the BJP to bring in money, guns and goons to West Bengal,she asked the saffron party leaders to “fight politically”. 
"I know this is hawala. All money is coming for the BJP. They are bringing money, goons and guns with the help of central security forces so police cannot even cross-check,” Mamata told reporters at the Kolkata airport before leaving for New Delhi.

Police have taken five people into custody and are interrogating them in this incident.
After this incident came to light on Sunday afternoon at Telipara Chowpatty under Jalpaiguri Banarahat Police Station, there was a commotion in the area.
According to police sources, a large amount of cash was hidden in the spare wheel of the car i.e. stepney. After receiving the information, the police of Banarat out post recovered a bundle of Rs 94 while searching the vehicle at Telipara Chowk.
According to the police, a total of Rs 93 lakh 83 thousand was hidden in bundles. 5 people in the car have been detained for questioning.
According to police sources, on Sunday afternoon, at Binnaguri Outpost under Banarat police station, there was a report that some people were coming towards Telipara with a large amount of money in a car from Dhupguri along the Asian Highway 48.
After getting the information, the police of Binnaguri outpost started checking in Telipara. During the search, such a large amount of money was recovered from a black car.
There were 5 people in the vehicle. The police got suspicious after seeing a spare tire in the car here. After taking control of the vehicle and bringing it to Banarhat police station, when the wheel was opened, several bundle worth Rs. 94 was found in it.
It is said that the car belongs to Purnia in Bihar. Jalpaiguri Superintendent of Police Vishwajeet Mahato said that the money was recovered from the car. The incident is being investigated. All will be produced in Jalpaiguri court on Monday. (Practical Khabar)
