
Jobs arranged for next-of-kin of Gorkha soldiers killed in Manipur landslide
Family member of the deceased are provided enrolment as Home Guard Volunteer
EOI, DARJEELING, AUGUST 10, 2022: West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee has kept her promise and provided jobs to the family members of the soldiers who died in the landslide in Manipur in June.
The Home and Hill Affairs Department Police Establishment Branch, on August 2 issued a notification granting one family member each of the deceased a job as Home Guard Volunteer.
The order stated that a proposal for rehabilitation through enrolment as HGV by way of special dispensation in respect of the 19.candidates who were the next of kin of the deceased victims as nominated by the District Magistrates of North 24Parganas, Jalpaiguri and Darjeeling district was under active consideration of the State Government.
In the Noney landslide on June 30 in Manipur, 56 people including soldiers and civilians were killed and five went missing. There were 29 army personnel among the dead.
From the north Bengal region 17 soldiers, including 16 from the Darjeeling district and one from the Jalpaiguri district were killed on that fateful day, along with two from the North 24 Parganas district.
Attending a government programme in Darjeeling in the month of July, the West Bengal Chief Minister in her speech had promised to provide jobs to the family members of the landslide victims.
On Wednesday, the Bharatiya Gorkha Prajantantrik Morcha (BGPM) posted in the party's official social media handle announcing the decision of the State Government.
The Anit Thapa-led BGPM won the recent election to the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) and formed the GTA Board. The party has pledged to work in cooperation with the West Bengal government.
