Covid deaths a concern: 58 died since January
SNS, SILIGURI , 7 FEBRUARY 2022: The unabated deaths of Covid patients at the North Bengal Medical College and Hospital (NBMCH) have remained a cause of concern, with three more patients dying there today. Health department officials said the deaths could he brought down if people undergo tests and get admitted in hospitals on time.
The principal hospital of the region had reported nine deaths of Covid patients within 24 hours yesterday. A 39- year- old resident of Conch Behar, a 42-year-old resident of Bhaktinagar and a 56-yearold from Kurseong died there today, sources said.
"Though the number of new Covid-19 infections has dropped, the deaths at the NBMCH have not stopped. The number of daily deaths is a matter of grave concern," said a public health physician.
The officer on special duty for public health in north Bengal, Dr Susanta Kumar Roy, attributed the situation to "late hospitalization" of patients suffering from severe co- morbidities.
"Many people are still reluctant to undergo Covid tests and they remain at home. It has been observed that people are being admitted in hospitals when their condition worsened. Another section of people suffering from preexisting serious illness incidentally tested positive for Covid are admitted here. Most of the recent deaths of Covid patients were caused by those reasons," said Dr Roy.
Sources said 58 patients have died at the NBMCH since January this year.
