Amar Lama to lead BGPM in Darj civic elections

SNS, DARJEELING, 5 FEBRUARY 2022 : The Bharatiya Gorkha Prajatantrik Morcha (BGPM) today announced the names of 25 candidates who would contest the upcoming Darjeeling Municipality elections.

The BGPM, which became the first party to announce the candidates' list, however, said it would declare the names for the remaining seven wards later.

The party also announced Amar Lama, the general secretary, as the face of the party in the polls and the candidate for the chairperson's post.

"We have to win the elections and make Darjeeling better and bring a proper system in place. This is possible only if we stay united. The candidates were chosen after taking feedback from different areas," said BGPM president Anit Thapa.

Mr Thapa also maintained that one of their main agendas when they form the Municipality board was to open up sector offices of the Municipality in all the wards so that the problems faced by the people could be solved with ease.

The BGPM president also asked their candidates not to criticise or bad mouth their opposition candidates. He said that it is with everyone together that Darjeeling can be made better.

Among the candidates chosen today are some former civic councilors, including Mr Lama, who is con - testing the polls this time from ward 24.

The name of Prativa Rai, who is contesting from ward 23, also needs special mention here as she was the Municipality chairperson in the year 2019 before a vote of no-confidence was filed against her and an administrator was appointed by the state government. Since then, an administrator has been heading the civic body here.
