Such a decision was taken in a KPP central committee meeting leaders held yesterday

SNS,
Siliguri, 9 NOVEMBER 21 : The Kamtapur Progressive Party (KPP) plans to launch a movement, demanding recognition of the Kamtapuri language at the national level, if the BJP-led central government fails to take up the matter in the winter session of Parliament this year.

Such a decision was taken in a KPP central committee meeting leaders held yesterday, it is learnt. Addressing the media today KPP's general secretary Uttam Roy said that the BJP had promised many things but that nothing had materialized so far.

"In 2014, before coming to power at the Centre, the BJP leadership promised recognition of our Kamtapur Ianguage. The BJP is ruling for the second term now after 2019, but it has done nothing for us. If the BJP does not consider our demand in the winter session of Parliament, we would start a movement on this issue," Mr Roy said.

Notably, the KPP, in its central committee meeting yesterday, decided to induct two more leaders from Malda and South Dinajpur in the panel. One Prabhat Sil from Malda and Tapan Sarkar from South Dinajpur have been inducted in the central committee, KPP leaders said.

According to Mr Roy the party will also launch a special membership drive in North Bengal and Iower Assam areas from 1 December, a campaign that will last till 31 December. Sources said that after the death of Atul Roy, the founder president of both the Kamtapur People's Party and the new Kamtapur Progressive Party, Menoka Roy, the widow of the former president, was nominated as the party president in July this year. A faction of the KPP has allegedly been demanding that the party should reshuffle its leadership. Asked to comment, Mr Roy said: 'As Menoka Roy was nominated as the party president in July, there was no set condition that she was nominated for six months only.
