Mathures Paul | The Telegraph | 09.09.21: To ensure users the latest features, WhatsApp will discontinue support on some older phones. And we are talking of very old phones. The baseline requirements are now phones running iOS 10 or later and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean or later.
The move is not a new one from WhatsApp. Last year, the app formally ended support for the Windows Phone platform.
Most likely, your phone is not using Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, which was released around 10 years ago or iOS 9, which came in 2015. Devices that are running these OS versions will become incompatible starting November 1, so save your chat history as soon as possible.
The reason behind the move is that ageing phones running old software build may no longer receive security updates and become vulnerable to attacks, besides the fact that old hardware doesn’t always support new features, hampering the overall experience.
