Rajeev Ravidas   |   TT  |  Siliguri   |   28.09.21: The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of Sikkim has arrested two persons from Rajasthan for impersonating as the vice-chancellor of a university of Sikkim and cheating some faculty members in the name of gift cards of a e-commerce website.

Tenzing Loden Lepcha, the superintendent of CID, said on Monday that they had received a complaint from Rajen S Grewal, the vice-chancellor of Sikkim Manipal University, in October last year. “The vice-chancellor had mentioned that all faculty members of the varsity had received an email in his name requesting them where they had been requested to buy gift cards sold by the e-commerce company. They were also asked to send the claim codes or the gift cards to the person who has sent the mail.

A number of faculty members bought the cards and had sent the details to the mail address,” said Lepcha.

According the vice-chancellor, the gift cards or claim codes are being used by the sender and his associates to buy products from the concerned website, without the knowledge of the sender or the person whose identity they have used.

During probe it was found that some gang based in Rajasthan was involved in the crime. “With the help of local police we managed to nab the two fraudsters — Subham Punya and Preshit Agarwal — from Murlipura in Rajasthan on September 18,” Lepcha said.

The arrested duo are part of a racket engaged in cyber crimes, sources said.
