TVIC leader in North Dinajpur held for `posing' as NHRCvice-chairman

SNS, RAIGANJ, 12 JULY 21 : Former Chairman of the District Primary School Council and TMC leader in North Dinajpur, Benjamin Hemran, was arrested by the police last night for allegedly posing as the vice-chairman of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and using the NHRC sticker in his car.

Mr Hemran was produced in the court today, where his bail plea was rejected, and sent to police custody for the next two days.

Mr Hemran was the English teacher at the Hemtabad Adarsha Vidyapith. Though he is a resident of Baraibari in Hemtabad, he had been living in an apartment at Chanditola in Raiganj.

"Police had received information that he was using the board of the NHRC in his car. He was using such a board without prior permission from the central government. Police last night arrested him from his residence at Chanditola," a police source said.

When contacted for comment, Mr Hemran claimed, 'The National Human Rights Council is a central government approved NGO. I am using the board as I am the Vice Chairman of the commission."

Superintendent of Police of North Dinajpur Sunlit Kumar said, "We did not find any evidence to support his claim. As such, we arrested him and produced in the court today and sought police remand."

The Public Prosecutor of the Court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate in Raiganj, Niladri Sarkar, said the court denied Mr Hemran bail and sent him to police custody for two days.
