Two die in Alipurduar, 119 Covid cases in Darjeeling district


SNS, SILIGURI, 9 OCTOBER 2020 : Former principal of Siliguri College Dr Janhabi Bose, 78, who had tested positive for Covid19, died in a private hospital in Siliguri today Dr Bose died on the 71st foundation day of the college today.

State tourism minister Gautam Deb and the chairperson of the board of administrators of the Siliguri Municipal Corporation, Asok Bhattacharya, among others, expressed their condolence on his demise.

Teachers and students who knew Dr Bose said it was hard to find such a man of prolific academics and a great administrator of repute these days. Meanwhile, a 55-year old resident of Kharibari died in Dr Chhang's Covid Hospital today, along with a 65 year-old resident of Matigara, who died there last evening.

Another resident of Ward 29 in Siliguri died in a private nursing home.Yet another person who had tested positive for Covid-19 died in the North Bengal Medical College and Hospital, sources said.

Two die in Alipurduar

Two Covid-19 patients from Alipurduar district, including a TMC leader from Falakata, also died today, district health office sources said. Also today, 63 persons were freshly tested positive for Covid-19 in the district, while 23 patients tested negative and were discharged from the hospital, sources said.

119 Covid cases in Darjeeling district

Darjeeling district recorded 119 Covid cases today, including 53 in the Siliguri Municipal Corporation, two in Darjeeling Municipality, eight in Kharibari, 10 in Kurseong Municipality, nine in Sukna, 13 in Matigara, three in Mirik, 4 in Naxalbari. eight in Phansidewa, one in Pulbazar/Bijanbari, five in Sukhia Pokhari, and three in Takdah, source said. The Jalpaiguri portion of the SMC separately recorded 13 cases.

Also today, 81 patients were released from hospitals and home isolation.

S Dinajpur graph up

South Dinajpur, on the other hand, has once again started seeing a spike in daily Covid cases. While the daily infection rate was below 20 on an average in the past three weeks in September, the district witnessed a good number of cases in the first week of October. The health department has blamed the "callous attitude" of the people for the spike.

A total of 46 cases were recorded in the district in the past 24 hours, while 17 patients were discharged from the Covid hospital during the same period, sources said.

According to a report of the district health office, the total number of active patients in the district as of today stands at 247.

49 in N Dinajpur

North Dinajpur reported 49 fresh infections in different blocks of the district in the past 24 hours, sources said.

Most of the cases were traced in Raiganj, Kaliyaganj, Islampur, Dalkhola and Itahar blocks, it is learnt. According to district health officials, 3973 persons have been affected by the virus and 42 persons have died so far. A total of 3555 persons have also recovered, and the recovery rate is more than 84 percent. However, officials expressed concerns about people not following health guidelines while venturing out.
