One dies; Darj dist reports 66 new Covid cases

Rai tests negative, Expert tours north Bengal districts, Siliguri Municipal Corporation also registered 45 cases, of which 23 have been found in areas under Darjeeling

SNS, SILIGURI. 14 September 2020 : An 80-year-old resident of Cooch Behar died at Desun (Covid) Hospital in Siliguri today, sources said.

Meanwhile, Darjeeling district detected 66 cases in the last 24 hours. Siliguri Municipal Corporation also registered 45 cases, of which 23 have been found in areas under the district, sources said.

Of the fresh cases, 13 are from Matigara, seven from Naxalbari, and four each from Kharibari and Phansidewa blocks. After registering a spike in cases in the past two days, Sukna witnessed a dip with seven fresh cases. Four cases were found in Mirik, two in Darjeeling Municipality, and one each at Pulbazaar and Sukhia Pokhari.

On the other hand, 53 patients have been discharged and completed their home isolation today.

Expert tours north Bengal districts

'To review the infrastructure of the Critical Care Unit of hospitals treating Covid-19 patients, the head of the department of anesthesia, Medical College & Hospital, Prof Ashim Kundu, is touring five north Bengal districts of Alipurduar, Cooch Behar, Jalpaiguri, Darjeeling and Kalimpong.

Sources said Prof Kundu today visited the Ayush Hospital in Alipurduar and Mission Hospital in Cooch Behar districts. He is scheduled to visit the dedicated hospital at Biswa Bangla Krirangan in Jalpaiguri and two hospitals at Kawakhali and Matigara in Siliguri tomorrow. He will visit Kalimpong on 16 September. On 17 September, Prof Kundu will hold a meeting at the North Bengal Medical College and Hospital, sources said.

70 fresh cases in Malda

Seventy more samples were tested positive for Covid- 19 in Malda last night, sources said. English Bazaar Municipality and Habibpur block had 12 cases each, while Bamangola had 10. English Bazaar and Ratua-II found seven cases each.

41 fresh cases in South Dinajpur

In South Dinajpur, 41 new cases were detected in the past 24 hours. The fresh cases included five staff of the district land acquisition department, sources said. The department has been closed and other staff have been asked to go into self-isolation and if needed, undergo tests. Seven of the fresh cases are from Balurghat.

39 In North Dinajpur

North Dinajpur detected 39 positive cases including in areas under Raiganj, Kaliyaganj, Isalmpur, Itahar, Chopra and Dalkhola police stations. At least 400 have been affected in areas under the Raiganj municipality alone so far, sources said. According to district health officials, the spread of the virus has slowed in the district and the death rate has also gone down.

Rai tests negative

Hill Trinamul Congress president and Mirik Municipality Chairman, LB Rai, who underwent rapid antigen tests tested negative for Covid-19 today, sources said. Mr Rai underwent the test after he came in contact in party programmes with Rajya Sabha MP and TMC leader Shanta Chettri, who said yesterday that she had tested positive for the virus.
