COVID-19: India Reports More Than 45k Cases For Third Day, Tally Zooms Past 13 LakhThe Wire, 25 July 2020, New Delhi: India’s new cases of COVID-19 continue to rise at an alarming rate, with the country reporting 48,916 fresh cases on Saturday morning. The country’s confirmed tally of the viral infection zoomed past 13 lakh on Saturday, just two days after it crossed the 12 lakh mark.

With 48,916 fresh cases, the country’s confirmed tally stands at 13,36,861, while the death toll rose to 31,358 with 757 more people succumbing to the disease in the 24 hours since 8 am on Friday.

The Union health ministry said that 8,49,431 people with the disease have been cured or discharged, meaning there are currently 4,56,071 active COVID-19 cases in the country. Around 63.54% of people have recovered so far. The total number of confirmed cases includes foreigners.

This is the third consecutive day that COVID-19 cases have increased by more than 45,000.

India’s tally is the third highest in the world, behind the US and Brazil. The country’s death toll is the sixth highest.

Of the 757 deaths reported, 278 were from Maharashtra, 108 from Karnataka, 88 from Tamil Nadu, 59 from Uttar Pradesh, 49 from Andhra Pradesh, 35 from West Bengal, 32 from Delhi, 26 from Gujarat, 14 from Jammu and Kashmir, 11 from Madhya Pradesh and eight each from Rajasthan and Telangana.

According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), a cumulative total of 1,58,49,068 samples have been tested up to July 24 with 4,20,898 samples being tested on Friday, the highest conducted in a single day so far.

Of the total 31,358 deaths reported so far, Maharashtra tops the tally with 13,132 fatalities, followed by Delhi 3,777, Tamil Nadu 3,320, Gujarat 2,278, Karnataka 1,724, Uttar Pradesh 1,348, West Bengal 1,290, Andhra Pradesh 933 and Madhya Pradesh 791. So far, 602 people have died of COVID-19 in Rajasthan, 455 in Telangana, 382 in Haryana, 296 in Jammu and Kashmir, 282 in Punjab, 220 in Bihar and 120 in Odisha.

Maharashtra has reported the highest number of cases at 3,57,117, followed by Tamil Nadu 1,99,749, Delhi 1,28,389, Karnataka 85,870, Andhra Pradesh 80,858, Uttar Pradesh 60,771, West Bengal 53,973, and Gujarat 53,545 cases. The number of COVID-19 cases has gone up to 52,466 in Telangana, 34,178 in Rajasthan, 33,926 in Bihar, 29,755 in Haryana, 29,921 in Assam and 26,210 in Madhya Pradesh.

Global scenario

On Friday, the World Health Organisation (WHO) reported a record increase in global coronavirus cases, with the total rising by 284,196 in 24 hours. Deaths rose by 9,753, the biggest one-day increase since a record high of 9,797 deaths on April 30.

The previous WHO record for new cases was 259,848 on July 18. Deaths have averaged 5,000 a day in July, up from an average of 4,600 a day in June.

Across the world, there have now been more than 15 million confirmed cases of COVID-19. In total, 15,736,813 confirmed cases have been reported as of Saturday morning.

According to Johns Hopkins University, the global death toll due to COVID-19 stands at 639,653. Another 9,043,205 people have recovered from the disease.

In many countries, official data includes only deaths reported in hospitals, not those in homes or nursing homes.

The US has recorded 4,112,529 confirmed cases of COVID-19, the respiratory illness caused by the coronavirus. Brazil is in second place with 2,348,200 cases, followed by India (1,336,861), Russia (799,499) and South Africa (421,996).

The US has also recorded the highest death toll, with 145,546 fatalities so far. The death toll has also been high in Brazil (85,238), the UK (45,762), Mexico (42,645), Italy (35,097), India (31,358) and France (30,195).
