The jump in cases, officials have pointed out, also corresponds to a rise in testing as 1 lakh samples have been tested daily for five days in a row now. Over the last two months, India has increased its testing capacity from 1,000 tests per day in March to one lakh tests daily tests.
Having more than trebled daily testing over a month, India is now gearing up to ramp it to 2 lakh a day. While the daily average has crossed 1 lakh tests, private laboratories, who fought long and hard to be allowed to test, have contributed to less than 20% of the total samples tested daily. This despite the fact that they make up almost 30% of the laboratory infrastructure.
Indian express reported that an analysis of testing records between April 16 and May 23 reveals that while tests in government labs went up by almost 270 per cent from 23,932 to 88,947, for private labs the figure rose more sharply, just under four times, from 4408 to 21450.
But as share of tests, on April 16, private labs did a little over 15 per cent of the total 28,340 tests done that day. And on May 23, that figure was just 19% of the total 1,10,397 tests.
A total of 170 deaths (1 day before-146, 2 days before-154) have been registered in last 24 hours taking the nationwide toll to 4337 (1 day before-4167, days before-4021). Today 3935 patients were released after recovery (1 day before-2770, 2 days before-3280) that tally 64426 (1 day before-60491, 2 days before-57721) that is 42.45 per cent of patients have recovered.
Within the last 24 hours 83004 active cases (1 day before-80722, 2 days before-77103) is recorded. Today there are 6387 new cases (1 day before-6535, 2 days before-6977) and 151767 confirmed cases (1 day before-145380, 2 days before-138845) is recorded.
Maharashtra still remains the worst-hit state of the country with 54748 confirmed cases (1 day before-52667, 2 days before-47190), 1792 deaths (1 day before-1695, 2 days before-1635,) and 16954 recovery (1 day before-15786, 2 days before-14600). Mumbai alone has over 35,000 cases — higher than any other state. However, in what may come as a relief to the state, Maharashtra has been showing a slight decline in the number of new cases reported in the last two days.
Tamilnadu is the second highest with 17728 confirmed cases (1 day before-17082, 2 days before-16277) and 127 death (1 day before-118, 2 days before-111) and 9342 recovery (1 day before-8731, 2 days before-8324).
The third highest increase is observed in Gujrat, it has 14821 confirmed cases (1 day before-14460, 2 days before 14056) and 915 death (1 day before-888, 2 days before-858) and 7139 recovery (1 day before-6636, 2 days before-6412) and release from Hospital.
