PROTEST AGAINST WORK IN GRASSMORE WITHOUT PAYMENT OF DUES Tea garden workers clash over reopening

In January, the management of Grassmore in the Nagrakata block had left the garden following protests by workers over mounting dues. The state labour department intervened and after few rounds of discussions, the management agreed to reopen the garden.
The workers, however, disagreed and asserted that unless their dues were cleared, they would not join the work.
But on Monday, Barla intervened and persuaded the management to promise that each worker would be paid Rs 1,600 as advance and reopen the garden on Tuesday.
On Tuesday, as a section of workers, mostly supporters of Barla, arrived for work, another group of workers protested.
"We had made it clear that unless the dues were cleared, we wouldn't join work. How can the MP and some other trade union leaders make a different decision and thrust it on us?" asked one of the protesters.
An altercation ensued and it soon snowballed into a clash. A worker suffered injuries to the head and some female labourers were allegedly beaten up.
Trade union leaders intervened and brought the situation under control. They could also persuade the protesters to join their work later in the day.
In the afternoon, most workers joined their duties, said sources.
Barla said: "Leaders of most trade unions, including the BJP and Trinamul, were present at the meeting on Monday. We don't want any garden to remain closed and hence, took an initiative to reopen Grassmore. There had been some misunderstandings but by afternoon, it was resolved. From Wednesday, situation will be perfectly normal in the garden.
In another incident, workers of the Naya Sylee tea estate, also located in Nagrakata block, demonstrated in front of the garden's factory on Tuesday morning, demanding immediate payment of provident fund and gratuity to retired workers.
None of the workers joined their duties..
