Binay claims CM poll vow

VIVEK CHHETRI, TT, 05 Jun 2019: Darjeeling: Binay Tamang and Anit Thapa called on chief minister Mamata Banerjee in Calcutta on Tuesday and claimed that she had iterated her promise that the Trinamul Congress would support their party in the 2021 Assembly elections.

The announcement has come after a section of hill Trinamul leaders said the party had not benefited from the alliance with the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha's Binay Tamang camp and Mamata had been "misguided" on the tie-up.

The candidates fielded by the Tamang camp had lost both the Darjeeling Lok Sabha seat and the Darjeeling Assembly byelection to the BJP. They had contested on the Trinamul tickets.

"I, along with Anit Thapa and Amar Singh Rai, called on chief minister Mamata Banerjee at Nabanna. During the course of the 40-minute meeting, we discussed a number of issues pertaining to the hillsThe Morcha leader said Trinamul would support the candidates of the Tamang faction in the 2021 Assembly elections.

"Mamata Banerjee reiterated her earlier statement that Trinamul would support our candidates in the three hill Assembly seats in the 2021 elections," said Tamang.

The hill leader also said the chief minister had assured the Morcha that she would continue to work to solve the identity issue of Gorkhas despite losing the elections.

State finance minister Amit Mitra was present at the Nabanna meeting.

Amar Singh Rai, who was recently made the chairman of the North Bengal Development Council, will also be appointed as an advisor to the GTA, Tamang said.

The list was not final and no teacher named in the list has been given the appointment letter. The GTA will review all candidates and the recruitment process will start soon," said GTA chief Thapa.
