TOURISTS TOLD TO AVOID TRIPS IN RAIN, STORM Fani brings hill travel alert
AVIJIT SINHA, TT, 04 May 2019, Siliguri: Cyclone Fani will pummel north Bengal on Saturday with roaring winds, thunderstorms and driving rain, prompting warnings to tourists against risky and hasty travel over the next few days.
The alert from tourism industry stakeholders comes in the middle of the peak summer season when hotel occupancy rates are as high as 85 per cent.
"Tourists should be safe and refrain from travelling for long along hilly terrain during the thunderstorm and rain. Landslides occur in some areas. There is always a risk of getting hurt or stranded on the roads," said Samrat Sanyal, general secretary, Himalayan Hospitality & Tourism Development Network.
A transport operator in Siliguri said tourists should plan itinerary keeping in mind the weather and should not act in haste.
