Post Polls GJM Play The Good Samaritan In The Hills
Wepen, May 20, 2019: The Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM- Binoy Tamang faction) is all set to play the good Samaritan. With polls having ended they have decided to set an example of responsible behavior by ridding the hills of poll campaign material including posters, banners and flexes.
“During polls, enthusiastic party supporters put up posters, banners and flexes seeking votes. With polls over the parties just forget about the campaign material. It makes the town ugly. This time we decided to put things right. It’s time to clean up the town. The youth organization of the GJM will be cleaning Darjeeling, Kurseong, Kalimpong and Mirik. Our units will clean up the GTA area constituency wise. We also request other political parties to do the same” stated Sanjiv Mothay, general secretary, town committee, Gorkha Janmukti Yuva Morcha (GJYM- the youth wing of the GJM.)
The campaign was flagged off from the Chowk Bazaar in Darjeeling. Members of the GJYM went around town removing campaign posters, banners and flexes.
Even the Central Committee of the GJM has made a similar appeal as soon as polling was over on Sunday. Anit Thapa, General Secretary, GJM (Binoy faction,) who is also the present Chairman, Board of Administrators, GTA stated “One of the main issues that we fought elections on this time is to make the Hills beautiful along with reviving the lost glory. In order to reinstall Darjeeling as the Queen of the Hills we have to bring about a change in the mindset of the residents. Together we have to make her clean and green. A step in this direction would be to remove all the campaign material. We appeal to other political outfits to do the same.”
This has been lauded as a welcome gesture, specially at the time when tourists are making a beeline for the Hills. The opposition parties of the Hills have also welcomed the move. “We welcome the move and are ready to support this activity. At the end of the day it is the people of Darjeeling and Kalimpong who will have to stand united keep the Hills beautiful” stated Ajoy Edward, member, steering committee, GNLF.
