KKKS cleans forest ,warns people
SNS, KALIMPONG, 26 May 2019: Kalimpong Krishak Kalyan Sangathan (KKKS) cleaned the 3rd Mile forest, above Teesta, where waste had been dumped since the past five months with around 50 supporters today. The organisation later warned people not to dump garbage in forest areas anymore and asked anyone who see people dumping waste there should approach the organisation with evidence.
KKKS has promised to reward 25,000 rupees, while keeping the informer's identity confidential. With garbage, degradable and non-degradable, scattered on roads of the town, the solution to waste-disposal problem is still yet to be found here.
Nevertheless, the people, young and old, have been trying in their own ways to minimize the amount of waste.
The organisation also said that if the concerned department fail to manage the areas, after the cleanup, or if they stay tight-lipped despite people dumping waste again then the KKKS will go ahead and register cases at National Green Tribunal against the authority whose jurisdiction falls on the area.
Bishnu Chettri, the general secretary of KKKS, lamented that the way people have been dumping waste in the jungle is not a good sign for the future and that the forest will not survive with human interference.
"I request every body to stop this. Please understand that if there is no forest, then eco-chain will be disturbed and they won't be any animals or food in days to come, say in another 30 years from now," said Mr Chettri.
He later said the revolution should start now It may be mentioned that the dumping ground of Kalimpong Municipality was in flames for weeks since 12 April and villagers near the dumping ground have barred the Municipality from dumping waste there.
