Fire at “The Noodle Maker of Kalimpong” Noodle Factory

Wepen, May 4, 2019: Kalimpong lost a part of history on Saturday. The heritage noodle factory of Kalimpong was gutted in a fire on Saturday night. The noodle factory features in the bestseller “The Noodle Maker of Kalimpong: the Untold Story of My Struggle for Tibet“ by Gyalo Thondup and Anne F Thurston.

Noodlemaker Gyalo Thondup was a common face in the hill town of Kalimpong, India. It was only in 2010 that Kalimpong came to know the true-identity of Gyalo Thondup. He is the elder brother of His Holiness the Dalai Lama.

Born in 1928, Thondup was the Dalai Lama’s special envoy, and an interlocutor between Tibet and India, China and other nations till he retired in 1999 and settled in Kalimpong. He occupies a very important place in the history of Tibet.

A three acre compound used to house the noodle factory and a single storey house “Takster House” located at the 8th Mile, Kalimpong adjacent to St. Philomena School.

Fire tenders managed to douse the fire at around 9:15 pm. Cause of the fire is not yet known.
