Rs 54L seized, 4 held near Indo-Bhutan borderMP, 18 March 2019, Darjeeling: With the elections declared, security forces and the district election offices have stepped up vigil. The Flying Squad of Alipurduar district has seized more than Rs 54 lakh from the Jaigaon area bordering Bhutan. Four persons have been arrested in this connection.
Based on specific information, the Flying Squad team seized Rs 54,87,800 from four persons from the Jaigaon area of the Indo-Bhutan border on Sunday night.
The four arrested persons, identified as Sujit Kumar Mishra, Santosh Nag, Ranjit Kumar and Subal Sah, are all residents of Jaigaon. They were found travelling with the cash concealed in black polythene bags. "We have started an investigation," stated Kuntal Banerjee, ASP, Jaigaon.
As per administrative sources, the entire seizure procedure has been videographed by the Flying Squad team and the police. The video has been forwarded to the District Nodal Officer, Income Tax for necessary action. The seized amount has been deposited in sealed covers in the double locker strong room of the Alipurduar Treasury, as per the rules.
"We are trying to find out as to why the four persons were carrying such a large sum," stated Shubhankar Das, District Election Officer and DM, Alipurduar.
