Another murder rocks Kalimpong

Birendra with dead body of Chunku
SNS, Kalimpong, 25 January 2019: A day after the body of one Chunku Thapa, who had been murdered, was exhumed, another man, Birendra Chettri, 28, allegedly murdered his wife Anita Lama Chettri,32, at Purubung busty near Sixth Mile in Kalimpong today.A spate of murders reported in the district in the recent past has sent shockwaves across Kalimpong.
Land or property could have been the motive in the murder, and sources said Anita had been trying to grab all in her name with the help of the 'court'.
As the police reached the scene of the crime, Birendra admitted that he strangulated his wife with a rope which was near him. As the police interrogated him, Birendra admitted that he killed her in a bit of rage as she had been "capturing all the land ..... by visiting the court"
"I told her many times not to do so as we had a small child and also told her that we needed to keep it for our child, bu she did not listen to me," Birendra told the police, it is learnt.
Birendra added that he and his wife had not been living together after they had a quarrel some time ago, while Anita used to come to meet her four-year-old son every once in a while at Nagssay Busti. Rajendra Lama, the father of the deceased, said  that Birendra was not a sane person as he had physical fights with Anita many times.
"He had once tried to kill my daughter with a khukuri (a sharp knife) at home, and also hit her with a pan," he said.
"My daughter was fine till afternoon, as I came home by 12 pm. She gave me food and asked me Rs 10 and said she wanted to go down to meet her son," he added.
Birendra was arrested today evening from the spot and will be sent to the court tomorrow, police sources said. Anita's body, meanwhile, has been sent to the District Hospital.
