3 arrested ... Smuggle cuffs on Bhutan men
TT, Jalpaiguri: The Bengal forest department arrested three Bhutan nationals allegedly with a rhino horn and an elephant tusk at Nagrakata in Jalpaiguri on Sunday.
Kinzang Dorji, Sonam Dorji -- both government contractors -- and an employee of an educational institution also named Sonam Dorji were travelling in a vehicle bearing a Bhutan registration number and intercepted at Sulka More.
Sanjay Dutta, range officer of Belakoba range, said: "We recovered the horn and tusk when we searched the vehicle. Preliminary probe suggests that the animals had been killed in reserve forests of Assam and the consignment was being smuggled to Nepal to be sold for around Rs 50 lakh." Foresters suspect them to be part of an international smuggling racket who procure items from poachers in Assam.
Sources said the seized rhino horn weighs over a kilo while the jumbo tusk is around 500gm. The items would be sent for a forensic test to Calcutta to ascertain when the animals were killed.
