Lt colonel, cops in Gold net Five arrested with 15 kg gold worth 4 crore in smuggling racket along Bhutan border
TT, Alipurduar: A lieutenant colonel and a constable from the army's intelligence wing and the sub-divisional police officer of Jaigaon in north Bengal's Alipurduar have been arrested with three cops over a gold-smuggling racket along the Bhutan border.
This is the first time in recent memory that such high-ranking senior army and police officers have been held in a case like this in Bengal.
Lt. Col. Pawan Brahma, SDPO Aniruddha Thakur and the others are accused of taking away gold bars - around 15kg and valued at over Rs 4 crore - from smugglers and releasing them without taking action. The cops held include Satyendranath Roy and Kamalendra Narayan.
A CID team arrested the five on Friday following inputs reportedly provided by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence.
Lt. Col. Brahma is posted in Hasimara, as is Dasarath Singh, the army constable. Roy is a sub-inspector at the Hasimara post. Narayan was the officer-in-charge of the post till he was shifted a few days ago.
