Dooars GJMM leader held
SNS, SILIGURI, 24 JANUARY 2018: The CID arrested a Gorkha Jan Mukti Morcha (GJMM) leader, Dawa Sherpa, from Bagdogra in Siliguri today.
Mr Sherpa, the GJMM leader of Birpara in Alipurduar district in the Dooars, was wanted in connection with violence and doting that happened in the Hills during the recent bout of the Gorkhaland agitation.
Special superintendent (North) of the CID, Ajay Prasad, said Mr Sherpa was wanted and arrested in connection with the rioting in the Hills.
Sources said the CID will also look into whether he was involved in the killing of police sub-inspector Amitabha Malik and some other cases.
The police officer was killed in a gunfight when a police team conducted search operation to nab the elusive GJMM leader Bimal Gurung, who is accused under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, near Little Rangit river in a forest cover, near the Bengal-Sikkim border in Darjeeling on 13 October last year. Some policemen were also injured in the incident, while a large cache of arms, ammunition, detonators and gelatin sticks were recovered from the encounter site.
On 17 January, police picked up the former Vice Chairman of the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA), Lopsang Lama, from the Bengal-Bihar border at Khoribari near Siliguri Police sources said Mr Lama was involved in various cases during the recent bout of agitation, while he was specifically wanted in a case when the Jaldhaka police station was attacked and two police vehicle were torched on 17 June 2017.
