Chinese terms for all of India

Ma Zhanwu
Meghdeep Bhattacharyya, TT,  Jan 16, 2018, Calcutta: The Chinese consul-general in Calcutta has called for "more stable and sound political relations" between India and his country and a "welcoming approach" by the people here in order to make Chinese investments materialise.

Ma Zhanwu, who was speaking on the sidelines of a meeting after the first day of the Bengal Global Business Summit, specified that he was talking about India "as a whole" and not about Bengal.

Asked why the quantum of actual Chinese investments keeps falling short of targets, he said: "First of all, more stable and sound political relations will contribute to more Chinese investments in India.

"Second, there needs to be more communication.... Chinese companies need to come to India, Indian companies need to go to China.... It's like match-making, someone might be looking for a wife, someone might be looking for a husband, but if they never meet, it will not happen."

He cited the hypothetical example of a village where a Chinese company decided to set up a factory. "The villagers will come and say something big is being built here and they want to do this and they want to do that, causing disturbance," he said.

Asked if he was talking about Bengal, Ma said: "The whole of India."
