Now, Civil Defence volunteers to be deployed in 
DarjeelingMP | 22 Jun 2017 | Kolkata : Civil Defence volunteers to be deployed outside all state-run offices in Darjeeling to ensure protection of public properties.
A letter has been given to senior officials of the Civil Defence and Disaster Management department.
In a bid to ensure proper vigilance on public properties in the Hills, the decision to depute two to three civil volunteers in every gram panchayat to intensify vigil and check if anyone is attempting to damage schools, hospitals, gram panchayat offices, forest offices and other state government installations.
The duty of the volunteers will be specially at night. The volunteers have been directed to inform the police and district administration on an immediate basis if any untoward incident takes place in the area where they are performing their duty.
They would also have to report if they find anyone or a group of people involved in incidents like arson.
Sources said that a total of 210 volunteers will be deployed. For the time being, it has been decided to engage the civil volunteers for the next 20 days. If needed, they will have to perform duty for more number of days. Each of them will be getting Rs 394 for performing duty for a day.
The Civil Defence and Disaster management department of the state government has been urged to allot around Rs 16.54 lakh to engage the civil volunteers. It may be mentioned that the state government is taking all steps to ensure that government offices remain open and employees come to work everyday.
