State-of-the-art bus terminal to be set up in Jaigaon, says Mamata

MP | 26 April 2017 | Kolkata: The Bengal government will set up a state-of-the art bus terminal at Jaigaon situated in the Indo-Bhutan border at an estimated cost of Rs 7 crore, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced on Wednesday.

She held the administrative meeting in Alipurduar district on Wednesday. The newly constructed administrative building will be opened on June 25. She urged the officials to work hard to carry out comprehensive development work.

The state Chief Secretary Basudeb Bandyopadhyay and Home Secretary Malay De along with the additional Chief Secretaries and Principal Secretaries were also present. Surajit Kar Purakayastha said in the meeting that the number of accidents had gone down because of the measures taken up under the "Safe Drive Save Life " scheme. Alapan Bandyopadhyay, Principal Secretary, Transport department said that under Gatidhara scheme, 97 vehicles were distributed and the district administration had installed 62 CCTV cameras and some traffic signals with the money provided by the department. Atri Bhattacharya, Principal Secretary, Tourism, said areas adjacent to the Jaldhaka project would be developed as tourist destinations. 

Mamata Banerjee will inaugurate a gate in Jaigaon on Thursday and the area would be developed into a commercial hub. Mackintosh Burn Ltd has constructed the gate. The Urban Development department has chalked out a comprehensive scheme for the development of Jaigaon which is a thickly populated area. A mini township on around 50-60 acre of land has been proposed on Gopimohun tea estate. The state government got possession of the tea estate after extensive legal battles. Jaigaon has tremendous business potential, according to a report submitted by a private agency to the UD department. For quite some time, the Bhutan government had asked the state government to set up a second Indo-Bhutan gate.

The state government is now engaged in the improvement of infrastructure building. The Public Health Engineering department has chalked out a scheme worth Rs 91 crore to provide drinking water to the area. Unfiltered water will be lifted from a river which will be purified and then sent to households through pipes. This will solve the drinking water crisis in the area. The state government has also proposed to set up an economic area development zone in Jaigaon along the international road connecting India, Bangladesh, Nepal and Bhutan. This will increase the economic activities of the area.

Thousands of laborers visit Phuentsholing and its neighborhood via Jaigaon every day. The economic activities that are taking place in the area are haphazard. Once a planned development takes place, the entire area could thrive with economic activities and will eventually change the economic scenario of the area.
