Despite a gallery, Kalimpong holds an exhibition in Town Hall

SNS, KALIMPONG, 10 APRIL 2017: A four-day art exhibition kicked off in Town Hall today where 30 artists from Sikkim, Darjeeling, Jaigaon and Kalimpong had their art displayed.
Th exhibition, organised by Kalimpong Artist Association Which was registered in 2008 saw various paintings like acrylic, water colour, oil paint, sawdust, pencil, etc. hung on t he passage wall till the first room of town hall.
Respected painters like Leonardo Da Vinci and Vincent Van Gogh got to inspire many artist but the painters who had their works displayed in the exhibition today were not inspired by anyone. These were painted out of melancholy, tension, poverty and as a vent out of their stressful life. They are self taught artists.
Talking to the Statesman, Churamuni Lama, the working committee member of Kalimpong Artist Association expressed his disappointment regarding die Art Gallery which is not there in Kalimpong. I along with other aspiring artists strongly feels that there is an urgent requirement of a Gallery here.
The members have been working in a bid to inspire the upcoming artists from schools or from anywhere and they want to organise such events regularly but the artists complain that nobody pays heed to their effort.
Sometimes it gets even difficult to get a venue, forget about the dream of having a gallery," said Lama. The deprived artists find hope with the formation of district: they now say that they would soon meet the district magistrate and explain him the importance of an Art Gallery here. "Three paintings have been sold already. This exhibition is also a chance to show our talents to the flocking tourists,' said Lama.
