Afraid of triple talaq, Muslim woman changes religion

SWATI SHARMA, SNS, MEERUT, 7 APRIL 2017: The fear of triple talaq prompted a Muslim woman to disown her religion and marry a Hindu youth, but the newly wed couple incurred the wrath of the members of the woman's family who at tacked them in the presence of police at Baghpat yesterday. The couple has been sent to Delhi under police protection, according to a senior police official.
While some of the Muslim women are ready fighting against triple talaq, Khairoon, a resident of Paul adnagar village of Baghpat district, took the drastic step to secure her life against it, In her statement to the media in police custody Khairoon said she had always been afraid of triple talaq which brings to end a relationship in just the time it takes to say the phrase. "This prompted me to change my religion before marriage an d now I and my husband will be together forever," she said.
As she knew this would be unacceptable to her family, she and the Hindu youth, Deepak, left the village on 7 March. She changed her religion on 24 March and changed her name to Khusboo. The following day she married Deepak in a temple in Ghaziabad, Meanwhile, the family members of Khairoon lodged an FIR against Deepak and four others.
When they came to know about the FIR, the couple engaged a lawyer, Mr Vinay Kumar, and went to the sessions court in Baghpat yesterday on the directions of Allahabad High Court to record their statements. But over two dozen people accompanying the family members of Khairoon attacked the couple in the court premises in the presence of the police.
The injured couple was rushed to the hospital for treatment and later sent to Delhi under police protection. "The couple had approached the police for security and as they wanted to go to Delhi they were sent there under police protection," said Anuradha Sharma, PRO of the Superintendent of Police, Baghpat.
