Leopard caught in tea garden

EOI, SILIGURI, 12 Jan 2017: Forest personnel today captured a leopard in the Leesh River Tea Garden area under Malbazar sub-division in Jalpaiguri district.
The adult female had been spotted since the past few days in the garden area, located about 42 km from Siliguri. The presence of the wild feline had created fear among the locals and they had stopped venturing outside after dark.
The leopard had been preying on fowl and farm animals. The locals informed the forest department as several big cats have been captured from the area in the past.
The forested laid down a cage in the densely forested Section 14 area of the tea garden to catch the leopard and the animal was finally discovered early this morning trapped in the cage. In its attempt to free itself, the leopard had tried to chew the cage bars and lost some of its teeth in the process.
The leopard will be released in the Gorumara National Park in Jalpaiguri district. Even so, tea workers said there could be more leopards roaming freely in the area.
According to the forest department, six leopards have been captured from the Leesh River Tea Garden area in the past one year.
