Deb hands over cheques to deserving students
EOI, SILIGURI, 27 Jul 2015: North Bengal Development Department minister Gautam Deb on Monday handed over cheques assigned by the State Youth Development Department to deserving students from various senior secondary schools, colleges and madarsahs in Darjeeling district.
Deb distributed the cheques to around 78 students from 19 colleges, four higher madarsahs, one blind school and 78 senior secondary schools from the district at a function held here in Siliguri.
The amount provided by the State Youth Development Department includes Rs.5,000 each to students from madarsahs, Rs1,000 to blind school students, Rs10,000 to college students and Rs5,000 to senior secondary school students. Speaking at the function, Deb slammed critics who accuse the government of providing such funds only when elections are around.
He said there are central, state and regional elections during the 5-year tenure of a government, “Therefore it is foolish to make such lame allegations,” Deb emphasised.
He urged the students to make good use of the money.
The students appreciated the initiative taken by the state government and appeared happy to receive the cash benefit.
