Teacher protest at NBU

TT, Siliguri, Dec. 2: Around 60 teachers of North Bengal University organised a ceasework today to protest state higher education minister Partha Chatterjee's decision stating that the government is doing away with the existing practice of providing extension to teachers after the age of 60 years.
The protest was organised under the banners of the Left Front-backed West Bengal College and University Teachers' Association (WBCUTA) and the All Bengal University Teachers' Association (ABUTA), demanding that Chatterjee withdraw the necessary circular and extend the retirement age of teachers to 65 years.
"It is an arbitrary action on the part of the state education minister to do away with the practice of providing extension to teachers in colleges and universities beyond the age of 60 years. We have organised the ceasework today to protest this insensitive move. The University Grants Commission has come out with the new regulation that state governments should extend the retirement age of college and university teachers to 65 years. Many states have implemented the UGC regulation and we demand that Bengal too should implement it," said Sanjoy Roy, a professor at NBU's sociology department.
There are around 130 teachers at NBU and around 60 participated in the cease work today.
Even though the 27 varsity departments were open today, classes were suspended as half of the teachers refused to teach.
"There are around six classes conducted for each batch of students in the humanities departments and four classes for science departments with practical sessions of two hours every day. As nearly half of the teachers were on cease work today, half of the classes in almost all the departments remained suspended," a varsity source said.
The agitating teachers said the varsity is already facing a shortage of faculty with around 80 teaching posts lying vacant.
"There are over 200 teaching posts at NBU and around 80 are vacant for a very long time now. If the practice of providing extensions to existing teachers is withdrawn this will make shortage of faculty members acute. Consequently, students and PhD scholars will face a problem," said Roy.
