Congress stages rally in Kolkata against demonetisation

Saibal Gupta | TNN | Nov 28, 2016, KOLKATA: Mamata Banerjee walked in a rally from College Street to Esplanade on a day when CPM called for a countrywide bandh. With political parties rallying around to cash in on Narendra Modi's demonetisation issue, Congress didn't want to the stay back. A rally, led by Pradesh Congress president Adhir Chowdhury, hit the roads on Monday. The rally started from Congress office at Bidhan Bhawan and proceeded till Park Street.

Speaking to the media, Chowdhury said, "Demonetisation has shattered the entire country, but the state is not doing anything to provide relief to the people. It should come up with a contingency plan so that the people can get the daily necessities. We know that the state has huge loans, but for the sake of people, some more loan can be done. This will be for a good cause."

Speaking on the demonetisation issue, Chowdhury slammed the prime minister over "behaving in a whimsical manner". "The countrymen are in problem and the prime minister will have to give answer to the people of the country".

Taking a dig at the recent child-trafficking case in the state, the Pradesh Congress President said, "The state should come up with a white paper on the (recent child trafficking) issue. How do so many nursing homes get licenses? The state should tell the detail procedure of giving licenses." Demanding a CBI investigation into the issue, Choawdhury said, "The child-trafficking network is spread over the entire country and the government should immediately order for a CBI investigation under the surveillance of the court. There is no surveillance of the state on the nursing homes. The entire health condition of the state is in a shambles and the health minister will have to give an answer."
