Insurance for small tea growers
TT, Siliguri, Oct. 19: The Centre has launched the Revenue Insurance Scheme for Plantation Crops under which small tea growers will be compensated for losses arising out of fall in prices, adverse weather, pest attacks and "any other factor beyond human control".
Apart from marginal tea growers, those with small holdings of coffee, rubber, tobacco and spices are also covered under the scheme.
According to a letter sent by the plantation division of the Union commerce ministry, the scheme would be initially implemented in eight districts of seven states on a pilot basis.
Jalpaiguri is the only district in the state where growers with tea plantations measuring not more than 10 hectares will be brought under the scheme. In Jalpaiguri, 9,000-odd tea growers will be benefited.
