Third bonus talks fail

TT, Siliguri, Sept. 9: The third round of talks between tea planters and trade union to fix the bonus rate failed today although the estate owners had proposed a ratio that was higher than what had been mooted at the previous meetings.
At the meeting in Calcutta today, the planters proposed bonus at 16 per cent, 15.5 per cent, 14.5 per cent and 13.5 per cent for tea estates in groups A, B, C and D, respectively.
"When we had sat for talks on September 4, the planters' associations proposed bonus at 15 per cent, 13.5 per cent, 12 per cent and 10 per cent for the four groups, respectively. The trade unions, however, today stuck to their demand that bonus be given at 20 per cent to workers of gardens in all the four categories," said a person privy to the deliberations at the meeting.
Sources said the next meeting was likely to be held on September 16.
