SDF ex-MLA held

TT, Gangtok, Aug. 4: Former SDF MLA Norzang Lepcha who was accused of misusing government funds worth over Rs 1 crore surrendered at the vigilance police station here yesterday following which he was arrested.

Norzang was the Rakdong Tintek (East Sikkim) MLA and the chairman of Sikkim Khadi and Village Industries Board between 2004 and 2009. The police had registered a suo motu case and Norzang was named as the prime accused in relation to a contract of Rs 1.23 crore awarded to supplier Joshua Pradhan without floating a tender, publishing a notice inviting tenders and rejecting quotation.

The then chief executive officer of the board, K.C. Lepcha, and Pradhan were arrested on July 21 and Norzang had sought an anticipatory bail. On Tuesday, the petition was rejected. Yesterday, Norzang was remanded in police custody for three days.
