Forum unity on wage & bonus
TT, Aug. 4: Leaders of the constituent unions of the Joint Forum, a common platform of 24 tea trade unions, today said they would present a united demand for wage revision at a tea industry meeting soon.
"We discussed two important issues - the minimum wage rate and bonus. The state labour department has called a meeting of the minimum wage advisory board on August 9 in Calcutta. Also, there will be a bipartite meeting with planters on August 20 and 21 in Calcutta to settle the bonus rates of the tea industry," Mani Kumar Darnal, the joint general secretary of Intuc-affiliated National Union of Plantation Workers, said.
It has been decided that the constituent unions of the forum will stick to their demand that the minimum daily wage rate for tea workers be Rs 300 or above.
A tea worker in Bengal earns Rs 132.50 a day.
On bonus, forum leaders said all the constituent unions had reached a consensus that they would demand bonus at a rate that is higher than 20 per cent.
Last year, bonus was paid at the rate of 20 per cent in estates of all four grades of tea gardens.
