NH-55 connecting Siliguri to Hills opens after 6 yrs
HT, 23 Aug 2016, TINDHARIA: The National Highway 55, which connects Siliguri with Darjeeling and was closed for more than six years, was opened on Monday after the railway authorities allowed the trucks to pass through the railway tracks in the landslide zone.
On Monday, hundreds of stranded trucks and passenger buses passed through the narrow stretch of railway track as local people cheered the occasion.
The Darjeeling Truck Drivers’ Association (DTDA) and local people had been agitating for the last six days demanding that the railway track on the landslide zone be allowed for the trucks to pass.
The indefinite hunger strike by the members of the DTDA was lifted on Saturday after SS Ahluwalia, the Union minister of state for parliamentary affairs and agriculture, met the agitators and assured them to resolve the crisis.
