Medical team for research on diseases plaguing the region
TT, Siliguri, July 5: A four-member team from the National Institute of Cholera and Enteric Diseases (NICED) visited North Bengal Medical College and Hospital here today to conduct a survey for setting up a Model Rural Health and Research Unit (MRHRU) for research on diseases plaguing the region.
NICED is a research institute under Indian Council of Medical Research in Calcutta, an apex body that promotes and carries out biomedical research in the country.
Samiran Panda, the senior deputy director of NICED who was leading the team, said: "This is our first visit to NBMCH. The work of setting up the unit is scheduled to begin after two to three months."
It will cost Rs 2 crore.
"While doctors at NBMCH will carry out research, NICED will play the role of a mentor and guide them. The funds have been sanctioned by the Centre," Panda said.
Sources in NBMCH said the unit would function under microbiology department.
